Kid love clay. It's a proven fact. We use air dry clay, and we'll paint them next week.

I teach them to make a pinch pot and a coil pot, then...they can make whatever they want.

And, they help clean up! great kids!!

Flip type books

You know those books that your can flip and give the figure a different head, or legs? Well, inspired by Carla Sonheim's Silly class, we created 3 page books.

I created the pages, with the dotted lines, and they each drew 3 different figures.

They could do people, animals, plants...and they did!



Dinosaur head, rabbit middle and lady feet. Lady head, rabbit middle and men feet.

One girl did hers horizontal, with animals and one of them upside down!

Full class, even though the kids received no reminder phone calls, they all showed up on the start date! (well, some even showed up last week, before we started up again.)



Those who finished their books, did a tree of life in watercolor.

Brian has his own fabulous style. I adore his little drawings...

Robots and picture frames

Robots. One of my personal faves. I ask the kids to think about what kind of things their robots would do for them, and then to design a robot with those 'skills.'

Always a full class! 20 kids the last week before the winter holidays

I found these cardboard robots at a craft store and just couldn't resist. The kids traced them, then made them their own.

We also had some little frames. They designed their frame on paper first, then colored them, and if they were going to give it as a gift, we had a gift wrap station too.

Mundo Lindo's wonderful friend, Elizabeth Chiment, gave us all these cardboard cones (yarn spools).
The kids painted them, then we cut snowflakes, then decorated their trees (or in one case, spaceship)

As usual, LOTS of kids! Teen volunteers, Leo and Lorena were there to help.

Clean up was kind of a challenge...

Gingerbread People theme

I made gingerbread cookies at home, for the kids to decorate to get in the mood for our project.

I set up a cookie decorating station. They were instructed to decorate, then eat immediately!

Then, we made gingerbread pins from everyone's favorite Shrinky Dink!

I gave this template to trace. You can see how much the shrinky dinks shrink! I had pin backs to attach, so they could make them into pins for possible gifts.

They, clearly, didn't need to stick with the gingerbread theme.

Self portraits

I guide the kids to draw a large oval, and divide the face to get the proportions. Frida Kahlo was our inspiration, since she did so many self portraits.

We had some extra time, so I filled it up by teaching them to fold fortune tellers (known as cootie catchers back in my day.)

Lunch bags

Lunch bags were the project today! I got them from Discount School Supply.
I had the kids draw some design drawings on paper first, then onto plain flat canvas. Then they did the lunch bag using fabric markers from Tulip donated by Pokey Bolton.

The kids come from different schools in San Diego, so it's great to observe them talking and making friends, while they make art.

Before class started I had help ironing the fabric.

And tracing and cutting the optional bird templates, that the kids could use or make their own designs.

With such a huge class (24 this time!) my husband and Janice have been volunteering to help me.

Papier Mache and drawing

Look at this group of happy kids! Wow! I was traveling the last two weeks, so Tomoko filled in to help the kids paint their papier mache stuff from the week before.

Papier Mache

Papier Mache! Calaveras (Skulls for Day of the Dead) and Pumpkins, and one airplane.
(Here's a tutorial I put together on how to make the papier mache skulls.)

We had about 22 kids.

Our wonderful volunteer, Janice, advises on airplane building.

After they'd made their papier mache shapes, they drew and colored a picture, how how they planned to paint their object next week.

Then, since they finished early, and it was a gorgeous day, we made paper airplanes. Carlos is instructing Ashley on how to fold an airplane.

Pumpkins & Tiles

The kids drew pumpkins, on green construction paper, using chalk pastels. The paper was cut to 12x12" squares, and as they finished their pumpkins, I tacked them to the wall to form a 'quilt.' They also created the 6x6" 'tiles' drawing from mexican tiles, and using markers.

Each kid drew two pumpkins, (and took one home)

I showed them how to divide the 6" paper into 4, using guidelines, and then drawing the repeating patter within the tile.

The kids had no school today (teacher parent conferences) so we had fewer kids than last week.

Mundo Lindo starts up again!

Mundo Lindo has started up again for the school year!
The 4th & 5th graders are 'nominated' by their teachers, and given applications to join Mundo Lindo. The class is limited to 20 kids. We had 22 registered before class...and another 9 kids showed up, applications in hand. So, we had 31 students!!

Thirty one kids. That's a record! Gee, do you think there's a need for a free after school art class? We didn't and won't turn anyone away. Look at these wonderful, talented, sweet kids!

We drew and painted in watercolors, from the birds and flowers I brought in.

Thank goodness, Tomoko Kuta, Director of the Education Department, was on hand to help, along with my husband, Don. Did I mention, 31 kids?

And, with extra paper, the kids made a little sketchbook to take home.

You gotta love this. He titled his book himself.

We have a new volunteer, Eric, the older brother of one of the students. He's in the 8th grade.

Mundo Lindo is a free, after school art program, held on Thursdays from 3-5pm every week through out the school year, for 4th & 5th graders in Escondido, CA attending public schools. It's held at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Mundo Lindo is a grant and donation funded program, and we really can use use some additional financial support. If you can, please donate here.

Mundo Lindo is starting up again soon! Fourth and fifth grade tudents will be getting applications through their teachers in Escondido public schools. Class starts Thursday, October 6, at 3pm and goes till 5pm. Woohoo!!

Horseshoes!

Our last day of Mundo Lindo for the school year, and so busy it will take two posts!
Above are some of the girls in their smashing tie dye t-shirts, that we made last week pictured at our quick visit to California Center for the Arts Museum.

Since it was our last day, we had snacks. The kids and staff brought pizza, cookies, berries, whipped cream, cheese and crackers macaroni salad, brownies, fruit...and more!

Then we used weldbond glue, and mosiac bits and created decorated horseshoes.

Mundo Lindo's GREAT friend Jill Hall, gave us some horseshoes from her ranch, and we used her creative way to decorate them. Before the glue dries, sprinkle with tiny seed beads or glitter!

And while the decorated horseshoes dried, we play horseshoes outside.

Last week Loreno showed the kids how to create a storyboard, and then photographed their clay figures and created animated films of the kids work. We watched the films and applauded wildly!

And we even had time to hang out. All within 2 hours on a Thursday afternoon!

Printmaking!

We had a great time printmaking! the kids created their own stamps from sticky back foam and stamped them on watercolor paper. Then they created a second stamp by incising into stryrofoam, and over printed with it on the same paper. And then they made some more prints in various combinations.

We made tiny houses today, following the reader challenge in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.

It's spring break, and even though we reminded the kids we'd have class, just two showed up. But it was fine and Nelly and Roxanna had a great time.

My assistant Amy and teen volunteer Monica made these houses.

It was a beautiful day, so we had airplane races near the end of class. That's teen volunteers Monica and Leo, with me, Roxanna and Nelly.

Picture frames from CD cases and felt

First, select the felt, cut the frame from felt and glue it on the CD case. Then decorate with images of spring.

Sometimes an artist just needs to wear her materials on her head.

If they had time, they drew and painted a watercolor painting for inside the frame.

This bird theme was inspired when the artist saw her two pet parrots kissing!

Drawing from images of real rabbits, the kids drew with charcoal, and then cut them out.

Then, they cut easter eggs from the tye dye paper towels they made two weeks ago.

We went out to the CCAE garden for inspiration (and little fresh veggie snacks) Nasturiums are edible.

Then, inside with our harvest, to sketch a design for the paper lanterns we'd be painting.

Using the sketches as reference, straight to watercolor on the lanterns.

And one could add some Chinese symbols to the lanterns too. This was Mackenzie's practice page.

And since it was such a gorgeous day, we spent 15 minutes outside running around at the end of class.

Building Forts!

Using the cereal boxes, shoe boxes, tissue tubes, telephone wire and anything else they could find, the kids worked in teams to build forts. (Leo, Jonathan and Jose had painted all the boxes with gesso, last week.)

Small class, because schools were out for a holiday.

I love doing sewing projects with the kids, though it's intense for Amy and I. Everyone needs help to pin the pattern, to thread the needle, to learn to sew, to re-thread the needle, to untie a knot, to re-thread the needle...The kids did great.

Last week, they designed their monster dolls, by drawing, cutting out and painting on paper.

This week, they redrew the pattern on paper, selected fabric, pinned the pattern and cut out the fabric.

They could sew on embellishments of fabric of buttons, or glue googley eyes.

Then, with right sides together, they sewed the edge of the dolls. We'll complete them next week by finishing the sewing, and stuffing them.

We had a full class, some painting their clay from last week, and some, who just started today, were working in clay.

Amy was at a meeting, and I was on my own. With Leo.

While I helped the one group with painting, Leo taught 8 kids to make pinch pots, coil and slab. Completely on his own.

I don't think I could be any prouder. Thank you Leo.

Mundo Lindo is starting it's fourth year! Here's Amy and the Thursday kids in front of the murals they made last year.

We worked with clay, today, learning how to make a pinch pot, a coil pot and then work with slab construction. The kids were totally engaged! They love clay!

December 18 ~ Holiday Party

Lots of kids and their families came on Saturday, from 1:30-3:30 for our holiday party. We had all the materials for the Wes Bruce project~ shoe boxes, straws, fabric, buttons, popsicle sticks, telephone wire, markers, glue, acorns....etc. The families worked together to create their own diorama. We had pizza and cookies and juice too!

We hung the two murals that the kids had done with Amy.

We were very busy this last Thursday before the holiday break!

A fabulous Nutcracker!

At the end of a very busy two hours, every kid went home with a wrapped gift (their mosaic pots) an paper roll something, an ornament a gift tag...whew!

We're making mosaic flower pots. Terra cotta pots, along wtih small mosaic tiles, glass gems (flat on one side) buttons, broken tile, and shells. The kids are gluing the pieces individually using Weldbond glue, from the hardware store.

We'll grout them next week!

We're also working on a large pot for the CCAE garden.

Art inspired by a museum visit

The kids and I and Amy had a field trip to California Center for the Arts Esconidido Art Museum to see the fabulous installation by Wes Bruce.

When we returned to the studio, each kid selected a shoe box. We'd gathered materials for them to construct whatever they wanted. Some of the materials were: shells, acorns, bells, spools, wooden sticks, fabric, glue, construction paper....I showed the kids how to add a wall, inside their shoebox, using a piece of construction paper, and let them do whatever they wanted.

Everyone's was unique and original. Some approached it from the architectural point of view, constructing floors, stairs, patios, while others when straight to the decor, wall paper and objet d'art.
